About us

We bring together two different perspectives: Elena Díaz, 王爱琳 Wáng Àilín, a PhD of philosophy and lover of classical Chinese, and León Nahuel Torres, 王南狮 Wáng Nánshī, a paleontology graduate passionate about Chinese science and history, currently pursuing a master's degree at Jilin University.

In addition to being mother and son, we share an admiration for this 5,000-year-old civilization and our experiences as students at Jilin University in the 长春 Cháng Chūn city in northeastern China, at two different stages of our lives. The header image belongs to this city: 南湖 Nán hŭ, the South Lake, a place dear to our hearts.

The four Chinese characters that title our blog, 南敬中国 Nán jìng Zhōng guó, are not a literal translation of the English name "China from the South" but rather "The South Honors China." We seek to respect the poetics and expressiveness inherent to each language, so in the Chinese version, we imitate the four-character structure typical of 成语 chéng yŭ.

This website is the English version of "China desde el Sur", originally in Spanish. Despite being its English version, we have chosen to maintain its original name, China from the South being the literal translation of "China desde el Sur", because it is still a page with a Latin American perspective of Chinese culture.
